This list contains some of the maps that I have available for exchanging with other collectors. Please note that the maps on this page are not for sale. Most of the maps here are ones I would consider to be relatively common, and so would make ideal trades for other relatively common maps from other countries, but there are a few distinctly rare or unusual ones as well. Generally I expect to swap (trade) maps on a one for one basis, with each side paying their own postage, but taking notice of condition, age or rarity when appropriate. I regard the Rest of World maps as being "rarer" if for no other reason that I see few of them. And some of the youngest maps in the list have actually cost me more, if they have come direct from a European service station.
I also have a small trade box of non-oil company maps that I can look in for specific places or types of map. It includes a few OS and Michelin maps, as well as rather more commercial maps, mainly from Europe.
This list is split into 4 sections:
- UK and Ireland maps - mainly post war sectional issues. I also have some pre-war Michelin maps of Britain.
- Continental European maps - the largest number, strongest in France & Germany. I have a number of 1930s Shell Germany maps at present.
- North American maps - includes some lesser names
- Rest of World - mainly Australasia, with a few US touring service style maps from Latin America and some from Africa and Asia, too.

Condition: All maps are in good condition for their age, unless marked FAIR or POOR. FAIR maps will have a noticeable flaw or be fairly heavily used, whereas POOR maps will have a major problem. As I am not a dealer in maps, most of the maps on this list are ones that I have subsequently found a copy in better condition, or which came in a bundle of maps that included other, non-duplicated titles. Please e-mail me for a detailed description of the condition of any map on the above list.Availability: The date of this list is shown at the top - do not be surprised if it appears to be a few months out of date, as I usually swap maps only in bursts, with several quiet months in between. I will try and keep the list up to date, but inevitably there will be occasions when maps are included that have already been swapped, or cannot be found.
What am I looking for?
I only collect maps issued by petrol, oil, or auto-LPG companies, or those issued by chains of service stations, which can include service stations attached to supermarkets or hypermarkets. I am interested in maps from any country of the world, although my collection has most maps from Britain, Germany and the USA (which means that I am less likely to want more maps from these countries).
Like many collectors, I am keenest to find maps from smaller issuers. Having said that, I would also like to fill in a number of gaps among even major US brands, where I don't have an example from that brand for a particular state or city. I am more likely to find such gaps with city maps and there are several cities for DX and Phillips 66, to name but two, that I am missing. I also have a liking for later Amoco/Standard (IN) maps, and still have some gaps in the various 1970s' series. I am also looking to fill in a number of gaps from 1960s' Canadian series, including Esso, Sunoco and Texaco, as well as BP and Fina.
Special wants...
I am always looking for maps from smaller names (such as Deltin, Eller Montan, Haltermann, Homberg, Minera, Rheinpreussen, Rückwarth and Westfalen from Germany, or Lobitos, Mex, MS and Murco from Britain & Ireland) and will willingly buy these maps for cash (I can pay in £, $ or € or via PayPal).
...and more common titles
As I have an extensive collection of maps, it is likely that many - but not all - of the more common titles are already in my collection. However I am still looking some of the following maps that may be relatively easy to find:

The four Nordic countries have continued to issue petrol company maps long after they have been discontinued in other countries. I am especially looking for maps from the period 1980-95, where my collection is quite lacking in numbers, with a slight preference for brands not found outside the region such as Statoil, OK, Kesoil, Union, Neste, Uno-X and Hydro.
Post-Texaco DEA maps from Germany
I am also keen to acquire more of the 1988-2000 DEA maps from Germany and neighbouring countries, including the sectional maps and the softback atlas that has been produced.
Recent Aral Freizeitkarten
Also from Germany, Aral has issued series of around 28 Freizeitkarten with photographic card covers at a scale of 1:200,000. Although I have several examples in my collection, there are many more that I have yet to add to it. I also have only one of the 15 titles in the first series of Aral Deutsche Tourenkarten, dating from about 1983.
1960s Aquila and Italian Shell Cartoguida/Town Plans and BP sectional maps
In the 1960s Shell, BP, Agip and other brands issued some series of sectional maps of the country. The Shell Cartoguida are probably most easily found, and I have a few gaps in the main series, with rather more gaps in the city plans that accompanied them.
Aquila also issued town plans, and although I have never seen a complete list, I know that there are numerous titles that I do not have.
Although I now have two-thirds of one set, I would also like more of the small format BP sectional maps, although these seem to be less commonly found, and of the sectional maps from other brands.
Recent maps from Ireland
Petrol companies in the Republic of Ireland continued to issue maps in the 1980s and 90s after their UK counterparts ceased to do so. Although I have a number of these issues, I am sure that there are others out there, possibly including examples from Jet, as well as names such as BP/Statoil, Burmah, Texaco, Shell, Esso and Maxol.
Recent East European maps
Petrol companies in Eastern Europe often started extensive map programmes after the market was liberalised in the 1990s. Although I have several examples from Shell, OMV, BP, Jet, Lukoil and others, I know that there are more to be found. I'm particularly looking for Benzina, Pap Oil and Total from the Czech Republic, anything from Serbia, Croatia or Bulgaria or smaller Polish cities from BP or Jet. It's less likely that much exists, but anything from the Baltic States, Montenegro, North Macedonia (FYROM) and even Belarus or Moldova would be welcomed.
Hypermarket map issues
There have been some quite recent issues by supermarket and hypermarkets, such as a 2001 map from the French Champion chain promoting the Tour de France that I briefly owned, before it was lost in airline baggage! There may also be others, and if from outside the UK, I would quite probably be interested in them.
Odd or unusual British titles
Among the UK titles I know to exist but would love to find is the Shell/British United Air Ferries (BUA) map of "Car Ferry Airports". I also lack the 1950s BP Pictorial Map of Cornwall. A little more recently, I don't have some of the Esso Tiger Tours leaflet maps from the late 1960s, nor do I have many of the short-lived Total town plans from the 1990s in card covers. Rarest of all, there is understood to be a 1939 Shell map of Scotland of which only 500 copies were ever printed - that would be a nice one to find! I don't think that maps were ever branded by VIP, Ultramar or ICI, but if they exist too...
And finally
There are lots of unusual titles that I have seen (once) and are possibly owned by fellow collectors or in the Osher or Newberry libraries. Falling into this category, I'd love to find:
- Lobitos from Peru
- Apex from Chile (and anything from Enex, Comar or Terpal would be great!)
- CVP and Maraven from Venezuela
- Shell (or any other brand) from post-1990s China
- Caltex of Meru National Park
- Burmah from the Republic of Ireland
